My Life Journey – Part 4:

It’s very satisfying when you know after a while that you have contributed in making someone’s life

better.

Working 6 days a week, 10 hours a day time passed quickly. I built very good relationships with most of my team , I had to learn some words of Urdu language to understand and communicate with my labours. At the site there was an experienced land surveyor, he had 2 assistants, one of them was a young very energetic guy. This guy was very smart, hard working and very polit, he told me that his dream is to be the head surveyor, but this cannot be achieved with the presence of his boss.

One day there was a book-fair in the city and this guy asked me to recommend the best book about land surveying for him to buy, the book price was around 150 Emarati Dirhams while his salary was around 600 Dirhams per month (around $250) only, I decided to gift him the book. He was studying it day and night until finished. On last month of the summer, his boss went on his yearly vacation . The one day we received an unexpected instruction from the project Consultant (the client’s representative) he wanted us to set up a critical part of the road we were constructing, that part was a curve, and the person who should do this is the surveyor, the surveyor is on vacation 😵‍💫, so who should

do it? Definitely, the surveyor assistant!!

He came to me helpless and hopeless ; curves are not as easy as straight line there is something called super elevation need to be calculated carefully based on several factors one of which is the designed road speed. Topography and land survey was a major part of my study in the Uni , so Itaught him about the curve design and explained to him how to calculate the super elevation and set it up step by step. He was so smart to do it correctly and got commended by the consultant

After less than 2 years this guy one day called to tell me that he got promoted and his salary increased to 3k per month..
